Diabetes strikes more and more people each year. It can lead to severe complications like heart problems, blindness, kidney trouble, and even amputation of limbs. It often runs in families, and women who have had gestational diabetes experience a higher risk of developing other forms.
There are some simple things you can do to decrease your risk of developing diabetes.
- Watch what you eat. Eat smaller portions, cut down on snacks, and eat smaller meals throughout the day.
- Limit your intake of meat, poultry, and fish. Approximately 3 ounces a day is sufficient to give you the protein that you need.
- Limit deserts. This is always a good idea, and as long as you’re at it, eliminate fried foods.
- Cut down on salt and fat.
- Increase your physical activity. Get up out of your chair and walk. Spend less time in front of the TV.
- Buy yourself a pedometer for motivation to take more steps throughout the day. While you’re at work, get up and go time to your coworker instead of calling or sending an e-mail.
This is basic health, people. Eating better and exercising more will always do you good, and one of the major benefits is decreasing your risk of diabetes.
